Veterinary CT scans in Pozzuoli: what this means for your pet

In the coming weeks, a new CT scanner is arriving at Villa Di Somma. This technology explores the inside of the body using very thin cross-sectional images and three-dimensional reconstructions. It is the preferred examination when X-rays and ultrasound are insufficient to clarify the clinical picture.

What a CT scan is

Computed tomography uses X-rays to build detailed images of the bones, chest, abdomen, skull, and spine. It does not replace other investigations, but rather complements them in complex cases.

When it can help

The decision always rests with the veterinarian. Common indications include trauma, complex fractures, neurological issues, the assessment of masses for surgical planning, as well as nasal, ear, and dental problems. It is also useful for exotic pets (such as rabbits, reptiles, and birds), whose small size can make them difficult to assess using X-rays alone.

The benefits of an on-site scanner

Currently, many animals are transferred to other facilities for a CT scan, often whilst in a delicate condition. Having this technology on site brings diagnostics, the operating theatre, and hospitalisation under one roof, resulting in fewer journeys and reduced stress. The scan itself takes just a few seconds, allowing for shorter periods of sedation.

How a scheduled examination works

Following a preliminary consultation, the veterinarian will assess whether your pet can be safely sedated. We will advise you on any required fasting (regular medications must never be stopped without veterinary advice). During the examination, your pet is sedated or anaesthetised and constantly monitored. Afterwards, the veterinarian will explain the results and recommend a course of action.

What to bring

Please bring any previous X-rays and ultrasound scans, a list of your pet’s regular medications, and their health record.
